Ranjitsinh Disale – Teacher setting an example


If you win a large amount of money, what would be your priorities in life which you would like to fulfil through that money? How many of you would think of helping others? Most of us would think, donating my money, it’s not possible as I have to fulfil my many wishes… But there are very few people who would think different.  Indian teacher Ranjitsinh Disale is one of those rare gems. Ranjitsinh, a teacher from Solapur district of Maharashtra, has won the $1 million (around Rs 73.8 million) Global Teacher Prize set up in partnership with Unesco, and gave away half of it to nine other finalists from various countries.

Disale who is giving education to girls at the Zilla Parishad Primary School in Paritewadi village. The Varkey Foundation, which has promoted the prize since 2014, said, “It’s only because of his dedication that girls of Paritewadi village and nearby are completing their education and are helping their families.

The foundation was surprised by “extraordinary announcement” made by Disale in a speech after winning the prize. As stated by Disale, he will share half the prize money with his fellow 9 finalists, resulting in each receiving over 55,000 dollars.

Winners in various categories were announced by actor-writer Stephen Fry in an online ceremony from the Natural History Museum, London. According to Foundation, this is the first time in the Global Teacher Prize’s six-year history that winner has shared the prize money with other finalists. Although they are surprised by his announcement, but they are also happy how Mr. Disale wants to contribute in the growth of the world.

Disale was selected from over 12,000 nominations and applications from over 140 countries around the world. The prize is awarded to those teachers who are doing exceptional contribution to the profession as well as also play an important role in the development of the societ
